Info about the “Countering CCP Drones” Act:
The Countering CCP Drones Act, introduced in April 2023 by Republican Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, aims to address national security concerns by targeting the Chinese drone manufacturer DJI. If enacted, the Act would add DJI to the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) list of companies considered a significant threat to U.S. security. As a result, DJI would be prohibited from selling its products in the United States, and existing FCC authorizations for DJI products could be revoked, effectively banning U.S. operators from using DJI drones.
Current Status of the Act
The Act has already passed the House of Representatives and is now under consideration in the Senate. According to official congressional records, the bill has been read twice and referred to the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation. Congresswoman Stefanik has emphasized the urgency of this legislation, stating, “For years, the U.S. government has been aware of the security risks posed by DJI, but action was delayed. Today, we are taking decisive steps to remove Chinese surveillance drones from our airspace.”
DJI’s Response
DJI has consistently denied the allegations and is actively opposing the Countering CCP Drones Act. In response to the bill, the company has issued a comprehensive defense and launched the Drone Advocacy Alliance to collaborate with drone users, industry stakeholders, and policymakers. As the bill progressed through the House, DJI sought public support via social media and expressed concerns raised by several first responder groups, who argue that banning DJI drones could negatively impact emergency services.
Next Step!
The US Senate will now debate the Countering CCP Drones Act, and potential amendments may be made before it comes to a vote. If passed by the Senate, the bill will move to the President for final approval and signing into law. Congresswoman Stefanik remains firm in her stance, urging the Senate to include this legislation in the National Defense Authorization Act, stating, “It is strategically irresponsible to allow Communist China to dominate our drone industry. The Senate must act swiftly to ensure our national security.”
